Johnson Commons West Renovation, University of Mississippi

Comprehensive renovation and expansion of 2-story, 50,000 sf campus dining venue.

The interior of the building has been completely renovated to create a voluminous market with multiple freshly prepared food kitchens to support a healthy living and learning environment.

The first floor houses campus offices and dining administration, as well as retail dining. It is also the location of all of the university’s student services.

Natural light was brought into the center of the building with new skylights and white, translucent ceiling clouds.

The new “Market Place” Dining includes four individual fresh food concept restaurants and a central catering kitchen to serve the entire campus.

The incorporation of the contemporary space into the historic campus was achieved using a tasteful representation of the university’s aesthetic, colors and signage.

Providing a variety of flexible seating options and locations, Johnson Commons accommodates residential dining seating for 800 and retail dining seating for 100.

Columns that were original to the building became an interior feature that serves as a reminder of campus history.

The exterior of the building was completely transformed and modernized through the addition of a glass wall, integrating interior spaces with the outside, while bringing the existing historical campus environment indoors.

Outdoor seating was created through the addition of a new balcony.

Tipton Associates was retained to renovate The University of Mississippi’s Johnson Commons West building which was originally constructed in 1964. $11 million renovations include modernization and expansion of the 50,000 sf, 2 story west wing which houses the main campus dining location, catering, and administrative offices.
