Formerly LSU’s student union, built in 1932, the Huey P. Long Field House was once home to a ballroom, a gymnasium, and a world-class pool. The historic building has fallen into disrepair; but in partnership with RHH Architects and Gensler, our mindful renovations modernize the facilities while maintaining character. Along with public spaces perfect for both formal events and group study, the Fieldhouse now contains state-of-the-art educational spaces, simulation labs, and instructional equipment that support the College of Human Sciences and Education’s immersive curriculum and innovations in research and hands-on learning. “This is what it means to be a flagship,” said President William Tate at the Fieldhouse’s recent ribbon cutting. These renovations free up 36,076 square feet of premium space throughout campus as the College of Human Sciences and Education consolidates its services under one roof. The facility strengthens college connections and adds new opportunities for distance learning, faculty wellness, and public-private partnerships with the highly lucrative sports industry.
The Gensler/RHHA/TA team has a strong history of partnerships which bring the necessary knowledge and expertise at a local and national level to provide a successful end project. Understanding the complexities of this facility, the team has provided a level of expertise to address: exterior historic preservation, juxtaposing new additions into a historic fabric, infrastructure and environmental requirements, and providing a contemporary interior while respecting the true nature of the building.
