In response to the university’s focus to proactively promote a healthy lifestyle, the Tipton/ABW team renovations and new expansion to the Lambright Center create a comprehensive wellness center.

In addition to recreation and fitness areas, the wellness center includes space for exam rooms, counseling and classroom to create a one-stop location for health advisement and education, tied to academic programs.

The student wellness center expansion was conceived as having all activities in plain sight to support student choice and promote social experience. A beacon for health and recreation, rhythmically positioned window openings create a lantern effect at night.

The lobby establishes a light-filled thoroughfare that directs movement between the expansion and the intramural center.

Appropriate site conditions and glass walls provide a clear view of the Louisiana Tech football stadium and student apartments, while revealing student activity within. Simple details incorporating the logo and dark blue of the university personalize the space.

Designed to generate a resort-style atmosphere, the pool runs 50 meters in length with curved sides for lounging and aquatic recreation and a 40’ tall superporch provides shade and shelter .

Counter Culture’s healthy food choices provide pool-side service, and the sundeck features misting machines and new cabana.

Funded by student fees, and designed with the students in mind, student focus groups were held to ask the campus community what they wanted this to become.

Random panels of clear and translucent glazing create a subtle pattern while providing both soft diffused light and views at the same time.

The Tipton Associates/ABW Joint Venture team were retained to reinvent LA Tech’s campus recreation program into a destination for students as well as the community. Existing facility renovation and an extensive addition include a 25 meter indoor warming pool and NCAA competitive diving pool with platforms; a new health and wellness center with space for exam rooms, counseling and a classroom to ultimately create a one-stop location for health education and advisement; a 29-foot tall by 50-foot wide rock climbing wall; and a featured 50 meter student life recreation pool with cabana, sunbathing decks, and misting machines.

This design masterfully blended the existing facility, both physically and programmatically, to the new. We now have a venue for a wide array of activities that appeal to a diverse student body. The impact of this new campus icon was immediate and will be felt for many years to come.
