Downtown Greenway Plan to connect parks and enhance connections

The Baton Rouge greenway is a three mile multi-use path connecting parks, neighborhoods, destinations, and job centers creating attractive streets and public spaces that enhance Baton Rouge’s sense of place.

A series of design strategies were developed for key sections and unique areas of the greenway exploring a range of alternatives incorporating sustainable storm water management strategies and green infrastructure principles.

Through a series of open workshops and design charettes, the design team worked with local stakeholders to develop preferred design options for each of the focus areas.

Working within the existing right of way, the design for North Boulevard incorporates planted medians, ample width bike and pedestrian lanes, permeable paving and rain gardens within the existing street pavement width.

Recalling the historical reference of the east boulevard street car, the proposed design incorporates a tree lined allee and separated bike lane over the remnants of the street car rails, incorporating them into the new design.

The narrow right of way of spanish town road allowed a unique design solution – the creation of a shared street or a living street where cars, bicycles and pedestrians occupy the street; pink flamingo pavement markings and signage raise awareness and celebrate this unique environment.

Working within the existing street width, bike lanes are incorporated into the design and unique pavement paintings delineates the greenway as it travels through the central business district.

Greening America’s Capitals is a project of the Partnership for Sustainable Communities between the EPA, HUD and DOTD to help state capitals develop an implementable vision of distinctive, environmentally friendly neighborhoods that incorporate innovative green building and green infrastructure strategies. The City of Baton Rouge received assistance from EPA’s program to help envision a new Downtown Greenway. The project team included Spackman Mossop Michaels, Tipton Associates, Baton Rouge Downtown Development District, and the EPA to work together to assess conditions along the proposed greenway route, evaluate alternatives, and illustrate sustainable design strategies for the greenway.
