Tipton competed in the 2014 CANstruction Baton Rouge “Comic-CAN” Design Build Competition

CANStruction is an international charity committed to innovation, hunger relief and collaboration

This year Tipton was excited to be a part of CANstruction 2014! CANstruction is a charity that has helped raise over 25 million pounds of food since 1992 and takes place in over 150 cities around the world. Ten teams competed this year, making it the largest CANstruction competition in Baton Rouge history. We’re thankful to our colleagues for helping us raise awareness for the staggering need our community has for the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.

The theme of 2014 was “Comic-CAN,” and we were drawn to the dynamic, incredible (edible) Hulk as our inspiration. Of course, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to build the ‘angry green giant’ out of green beans. The giant fist is depicted ‘Smashing’ out of a floor of juice boxes and is a towering 9-feet tall! While we added an internal wire support system for safety, the entire sculpture is load-bearing on the cans themselves. Even our comic-inspired ‘walls’ are all stacked cans with Tipton’s custom-made fonts.

Our “Hulk Smash!” sculpture was made up of 3,512 cans of food and 1,752 juice boxes, weighing in at over 4,700 pounds of non-perishable food. Per the rules of the competition, all of the entries were built in one day, giving us the opportunity to see our colleagues realizing their own sculptures. After combining the donations from all ten teams that competed, this year’s donation to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank totals over 23,000 lbs. of food!

The entries were built in the atrium of the Shaw Center and throughout the Louisiana Art & Science Museum. All entries are on display through September 14, so check them out and let us know what you think. Donations can also be made to the Food Bank at LASM, which is a good thing, because you wouldn’t like the Hulk when he’s hungry…
