Penland Hall, Baylor University

$9.3 million dollar expansion and exterior/interior renovation of the existing dining facility.

Challenged to transform the busy campus corner, the Tipton team created a new entry and student plaza which activates the major pedestrian path from student housing to the student center.

15,500 sq ft of new dining space was added to the existing dining hall. Today, Penland Hall seats over 1000 with upgraded meal service from 6-7 RFoC platforms to 11 Fresh Food Company stations.

A significant increase in natural lighting and ceiling heights were incorporated throughout, a new student plaza for social gathering spaces and events was designed in respect to the adjacent dormitories.

The large addition was nestled into the existing freshman dormitory adding sidewalks and accommodations for a new transit stop. The Texas Porch offers shaded seating for 80.

This project had an aggressive design, bid, build schedule and opened to students on time. The design team utilized a phased project delivery method allowing construction of the addition to begin prior to existing dining hall closure, thereby eliminating the need for interruptions to meal plan service.

Tipton Associates’ Fresh Food Company at Baylor University includes 9 service platforms and seats over 1,050 inside with seating for 80 outside on the Texas Porch. The project also includes new parking, bike racks and sidewalks to enhance student circulation. The dining is located within the campus’ residential community and offers 5 means of access including access from the student housing.
