Identified at the outset as “The Library in the Park,” this facility required development of memorable public spaces as well as unique age-appropriate library environments, significant accommodations for public meetings, and access to technology while also housing the administrative functions for the entire Parish Library System.
Transparent building forms immerse patrons in the surrounding Independence Park. Administrative functions form a multi-story “bar” along the south side with strategic openings to assure the infusion of natural light into all interior working spaces. Roof gardens provide bonus experiences for staff and library patrons and further extend library functions into the park. Likewise, park amenities engage multiple building surfaces to encourage access and use of library facilities by park visitors.
The design team engaged the community throughout the design and planning process, holding multiple open meetings with citizens, stakeholders, library board, and administration, ultimately garnering widespread support for the final design.
We embraced sustainability with major emphasis on site strategies to manage and filter water, efficient building systems and envelope, daylighting, and rainwater harvesting to support green roof development. The library was the first city building project to pursue LEED certification and it has helped to inform the EBRP Library System of the way patrons utilize library resources today.
